Welcome Students and Parents!!!

2011-2012 School Year Welcome Message

BRIEF CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Social studies in grade 8 focuses on the study of United States and New York State history.  The topics and skills allow students to better understand ourselves by tracing the human experience in the United States from 1865 to the present.

WHAT WILL I NEED EVERYDAY FOR THIS CLASS?
            1.  Something to write with - pen or pencil
            2.  Team 3-ring binder
            3.  Notebook

WHAT WILL I BE EXPECTED TO DO IN THIS CLASS?
We will be improving our reading, thinking and communication skills by consistently using historical inquiry, not just memorizing neatly packaged records of facts, people, and events.  Historical inquiry means we begin with developing question(s), then analyzing evidence (often primary sources) and creating our own interpretations of history.  The issues we will investigate are rooted in historical events that are relevant to the present.

WHAT WILL I GAIN BY PARTICIPATING IN THIS CLASS?
As a result of preparation and participation in this class, students will be able to analyze different sources of information.  Students will be prepared to communicate evidence-based arguments on significant social, political and economic issues.  Students who study history will gain a greater understanding of themselves, their peers, their community and the world.  Through historical inquiry, students will be better prepared to become leaders in the 21st Century - gaining power, access and increasing opportunities.

This website will be used DAILY to keep students informed, engaged and collaborating with their classmates and teacher.

Daily agendas, class assignments and materials, links to relevant information and online gradebooks are all available through this site.  Feel free to use the drop down menu above to explore what my students experienced during past school years.  There are also links on the left that you can explore to see class expectations.
