Why Study History?

Thinking as a historian can help you:
1. Learn how to analyze information
2. See relationship between cause and effect
3. Make sense of the past and connect to the present
4. Learn how to communicate by making clear arguments
5. Gain greater understanding of the world and people
ALL SKILLS INVOLVED IN READING, WRITING, and SPEAKING IN ALL SUBJECTS
Bernier, Williams, Willis, Coffey, Trejo. Thinking as a Historian.

"Unlike many other peoples, Americans are not bound together by a common religion or a common ethnicity. Instead, our [unifying] heritage is a democratic vision of liberty, equality, and justice. If Americans are to preserve that vision and bring it to daily practice, it is [necessary] that all citizens understand how it was shaped in the past."
Kenneth T. Jackson, from the National Council for History Education (NCHE)

“History gives us practice in coming to know others, whether they live on the other side of the tracks or the other side of the millennium...Historical knowing teaches us to go beyond our own image, to go beyond our brief life, and go beyond the fleeting moment in human history into which we have been born.”
Sam Wineburg, Historical Thinking and Other Unnatural Acts

In Favor of the Cause

In Favor of the Cause

Like the pyramid on the back of the dollar, our nation is unfinished. We are meant to discuss and debate issues to continue the work of our unfinished nation
