INDUSTRIALIZATION: Stuffed Figure Theater

HW: Contribution #5 to Virtual Textbook Due Friday. Sign Up for text notification. See Left.
Chapter 18 GOAL: Evaluate how industrialization increased the speed of change
18.1: Recognize 4 factors that led to the growth of industry

Discrepant Event Inquiry:
Andy immigrated to the US in 1848 and grew up poor in the sooty-city of Pittsburgh, PA. When he was a boy he earned $1.20 a week working in a cotton factory. He also held jobs as a messenger boy and later worked on a railroad. Andy learned what poverty meant when his father had to beg for work. Andy decided to fix that when he grew up. When Andy sold his company in 1901 for $480 million ($10 billion today), he became the "richest man in the world." Andy built 2,500 libraries, including one in Syracuse. By the time Andy's life was over, he gave away $350 million. What you must figure out is what Andy did to go from being poor to the richest man in the world?
