Welcome!
BRIEF CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Social studies in grade 8 focuses on the study of United States and New York State history. The topics and skills allow students to better understand ourselves by tracing the human experience in the United States from 1865 to the present.
WHAT WILL I BE EXPECTED TO DO IN THIS CLASS?
We will be improving our reading, thinking and communication skills by consistently using historical inquiry, not just memorizing neatly packaged records of facts, people, and events. Historical inquiry means we begin with developing question(s), then analyzing evidence (often primary sources) and creating our own interpretations of history. The issues we will investigate are rooted in historical events that are relevant to the present.
WHAT WILL I GAIN BY PARTICIPATING IN THIS CLASS?
As a result of preparation and participation in this class, students will be able to analyze different sources of information. Students will be prepared to communicate evidence-based arguments on significant social, political and economic issues. Students who study history will gain a greater understanding of themselves, their peers, their community and the world. Through historical inquiry, students will be better prepared to become leaders in the 21st Century - gaining power, access and increasing opportunities.
